Mechanism of Action:Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). Bangkok, Oct. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Viatris Therapeutics, Inc., one of the world's largest biosimilar companies, announced today that it has received final approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for a generic version of the erectile dysfunction medication sildenafil. The company will begin commercializing sildenafil in mid-March 2014. Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra and Pfizer's erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs. The first commercialization of sildenafil was in 1998, but was delayed until 2011 due to generic competition. Viagra and sildenafil are both prescription drugs.
Viagra was approved for sale in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998. In 1999, the FDA granted approval for sildenafil to be sold under the brand name Revatio and for which the U. S. Food and Drug Administration previously approved Revatio for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Revatio is also approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men (ED). In 2002, Viagra was approved for use in men who were treated with sildenafil, a drug to improve blood flow to the penis. Revatio is an oral therapy that treats erectile dysfunction. In 2013, the FDA granted approval for Viagra to be sold under the brand name Cialis.
